“Is it midnight yet?” Mahendra wants to know, after it seems like it might have been long enough since the sun set, and Mother says “Not yet, my darling.” He settles in to wait, and does wait, until his bottom is numb and his legs weary, until surely it must be midnight and Gopala born at last. He explains all this, very solemnly, and he can’t see why Father should sound so amused when Father answers: “Mahendra. It’s been five minutes .” Mahendra slumps, disappointed; but then again, they did say good things came to those who waited, and by that logic, the payasam that Aunt Lakshmi had prepared to have with midnight prayers must be the best thing of all. An eternity passes, and before Mahendra can even ask, Mother says: “It’s not.” Humph. Amritam it must be, to make all this waiting worth it.
